When I began my career in manufacturing in the early 1980s, our machine shop looked very different than it does today.

Back then, the shop was filled with traditional manual equipment—engine lathes, vertical milling machines, band saws, drill presses, and surface grinders. Every machine required the full attention of a skilled machinist. The operator controlled every cut, feed rate, measurement, and movement. If the machinist stepped away, production stopped.

The accepted philosophy was simple: One Machine. One Operator. It wasn’t merely common practice—it was the only practical way to operate a manual machine shop.

Manufacturing Has Changed
