Why More Air Isn’t Always Better
Overview
CFM, or Cubic Feet per Minute, measures the volume of air a dust collector can move. While CFM is one of the most advertised specifications, the highest number does not automatically produce the best dust collection. Air volume must work together with air velocity and low system resistance to transport chips effectively.
What Is CFM?
CFM stands for Cubic Feet per Minute and represents the amount of air moving through the dust collection system. A CNC router continuously produces chips, making adequate airflow essential for maintaining a clean cutting area and preventing chips from being recut by the tool.
Why Air Volume Matters
A dust collection system must capture chips at the cutter, transport them through the ductwork, prevent buildup around the tool, and remove airborne dust. If airflow drops too low, chips accumulate around the cutter, cut quality declines, and tool life may suffer.
More Isn’t Always Better
A dust collector capable of moving tremendous volumes of air may still perform poorly if that airflow never reaches the cutter. Restrictions in the ductwork, poor dust shoe design, or excessive static pressure can reduce useful airflow long before it reaches the machine.
Air Volume and Air Velocity Work Together
Air volume determines how much air is available. Air velocity determines how effectively that air transports chips. Neither measurement alone determines system performance. Successful dust collection requires balancing both.
Reserve Capacity
A dust collector operating comfortably below its maximum capability has reserve capacity for dirty filters, longer duct runs, seasonal changes, and future shop expansion. Buying slightly more collector than today’s needs often pays dividends over time.
Legacy Shop Lesson
Imagine loading lumber onto a conveyor belt. A belt that is too narrow cannot carry enough material. A belt that is very wide but barely moving is equally ineffective. Dust collection requires both adequate capacity and proper speed.
Common Misconception
“If two dust collectors have the same CFM rating, they will perform the same.” Published CFM ratings are often measured under ideal conditions. Once real ductwork, elbows, filters, and dust shoes are added, actual airflow may be very different.
Quick Shop Checklist
□ Is my collector sized for both current and future needs?
□ Is my ductwork minimizing airflow losses?
□ Are my filters clean?
□ Is airflow reaching the cutter rather than being lost elsewhere?
□ Am I balancing CFM with proper air velocity?
Legacy Recommendation
For most Maverick 4×8 CNC systems, Legacy recommends designing the entire dust collection system around balanced airflow rather than simply chasing the highest advertised CFM rating.
