Tool Assembly for ATC

This tutorial provides a comprehensive guide on assembling tools specifically for the Auto Tool Change systems of a CNC machine. The instructor, Chris, walks through the entire process from preparing the tool holder to properly inserting it in the tool rack. Key points covered include:

  1. Removing the aluminum bar clamp to allow machine movement.
  2. Overview of the necessary tools and materials, including tool holders, collets, and Dyna Glide lubricant spray.
  3. Cleaning the tool holder and collet to remove protectant oil for proper assembly.
  4. Assembling the collet with the collet nut and ensuring secure locking.
  5. Threading the assembled collet onto the tool holder until partially compressed.
  6. Preparing the surfacing cutter by removing any protective coatings before installation.
  7. Demonstrating the use of the tool changing clamp located in the machine’s back right corner.
  8. Properly inserting the tool holder into the clamp, ensuring alignment with the tool changing mechanism.
  9. Inserting the cutter into the tool holder while maintaining the appropriate shaft length and avoiding bottoming out.
  10. Placing the tool holder into the tool rack, ensuring correct positioning and alignment in the designated slots.
  11. Highlighting the importance of proper assembly and positioning of tool holders to prevent damage.
  12. Finalizing the tutorial with a reminder to turn on the machine and appreciation for viewer engagement.

Introduction to Tool Assembly (0:00-1:12)

0:00-0:20: “Hello. Hello, welcome back to another Legacy training video. My name is Chris. And today we’re going to talk about tool assembly specifically for the Auto Tool change systems. We’re going to do this after you have removed this aluminum bar clamp so that your machine can move freely. So let’s get in how to properly assemble your tool holder.”

0:26-0:48: “Your machine comes with tool holders and collets as well as with a can of Dyna Glide lubricant spray. Now you’re going to need to order a Surfacing cutter. This is an inch and a quarter surfacing cutter from magnate. We’re going to use that later. Let’s start with A brand new tool holder and we’re going to assemble or clean and assemble this tool holder.”

0:52-1:08: “That’s going to have a lot of protectant oil on there and we’ll need to clean all of that off. So we’ll unthread the collet. Call it nut. I mean, so this is the call it nuts and your tool holder. using our Dyna Glide”

Cleaning the Tool Holder and Collet (1:12-2:30)

1:12-1:14: “will clean all of those surfaces.”

1:35-1:37: “Then we’re going to do the same thing for the collet.”

1:45-1:47: “Again, it’s going to have all this grease on here. So we need to clean all that off.”

1:51-2:29: “The Dyna Glide does two things. It helps clean, but also dissipates heat so that these products will last longer. With everything clean. We’re now ready to assemble our tool holder. Now, it’s important that we do this correctly or it’s it can cause damage to our Cutters the tool holder or call it and even the spindle. So let’s show you how it’s done. The first thing we need to do is a properly assemble the collet with the collet nut. Now there’s this kind of GrooVe in here along the top surface of the collet and that’s going to lock directly into a kind of a still ring on the internal side of the actual call it nut.”

Assembling the Tool Holder (2:30-4:00)

2:31-3:15: “So once you press you’re going to hear a click. And you know, you’ve done it correctly when this is about flush and if you turn it upside down, it doesn’t fall apart. They’re now connected with one another after that. We can then take this and thread it directly onto the threads of the tool holder and I’ll just thread that on until I can start filling the call it start to compress and I’ll back that off about a half of a turn now. This is ready to receive a tool. Now we’re ready to put in the 2704 cutter. That’s the surface and cutter from magnate into our tool holder a brand new cutter though is going to have the same thing. It’s going to have kind of this protectant sometimes rubber coating on there or grease and so we’re going to remove that. And then we’ll need to clean that as well.”

3:20-4:00: “Okay. Now let’s go show you how to install the tool in the tool holder in the tool changing clamp at the machine. Now in the back right corner of your machine next to your tool rack, you’re going to find this tool changing clamp. Let’s show you how to use that properly. Now to open up the tool clamp this front latch won’t lift until you lift up the back and then this latch will then open. So this is simply a locking latch. We’re going to take our tool holder. Now. The tool holder has some Flats on the shoulders here those Flats need to go on the inside edges of the actual tool changing clamp. If I put it in there with the sides”

Installing the Tool in the Machine (4:00-5:05)

3:57-4:06: “clamp. If I put it in there with the sides not facing towards those I’ll have to rotate it and then you’ll see it seats properly once those have aligned up.”

4:11-4:30: “Then we can insert our cutter now for the cutter. You want a minimum of about one inch of shaft going into the collet, but you never want to bottom out the tool in the actual call it itself. So we’re going to insert majority of that shaft. And then we can tighten it up.”

4:34-5:06: “Now we’re ready to insert this into our tool rack. We’re going to place this in tool number one from the right side of the machine that’s going to be this back right corner from right to left and that goes one two, three, four, five six seven. If I’m at the operator that’s going to be from left to right this corner closest to this back right corner will always be tool number one. So let’s show you how to properly insert the cutter into these tool clips. Now the tool holder has a Groove here in the center the spacing between the collet and”

Finalizing Tool Holder Placement (5:05-5:45)

5:03-5:45: “center the spacing between the collet and the tool holder is not where we want to place this in the clip. We need to place it in the center groove of the actual tool holder. So there’s this Center clip Groove. I’m going to line that up and press it in. And when it’s flushed to the top or really close to flush to the top that’s when you know, it’s in properly if it’s too high like this. I’ve put it between the collet and the tool holder. It’s too high. That is incorrect. So make sure I put that in the center Groove. Remember, it’s absolutely critical that we assemble the tool holders correctly and position them in the tool rack in the right location. Now, you’re ready to turn the machine on and as always thanks for watching and we’ll see you in the next video.”
