Introduction & Project Overview (0:00-2:02)
0:05-2:02: “Well, hello. Hello, I’m Chris. And I’m Mason. We’re with the legacy team and in the last series, or should we say sequence of videos, we call ’em episode one through six. They went through the two days of CNC training if you were to come here for those two days of training. And, um, we cover all those details. Yeah. Mason here, that was your first time going through that. And how do you feel after going through all that information? A lot better. A lot better, a lot more confident. Good. That’s what we like to hear. The uh, because you were able to produce parts for the horizontal, the vertical, and the turning workstations. Mm-hmm. So that’s pretty rock solid. However, we were only producing sample parts. Mm-hmm. Nothing that you could typically use quite yet, right? Yeah. Like a full project. And so that’s what we’re gonna focus on right now in this kind of sequence of videos. We’re gonna call these our onboarding projects. And a lot of customers are really excited about these. Uh, ’cause if you’re new to CNC, you may not know how to design and program parts yet. And if we can get you started with just here’s the files and just start building parts, then again, you can find success as fast as possible. So here we have our, our prototype. This, uh, welcome sign will be one of your first projects that we’re gonna do in this video. Uh, this, so this is a, a one part project. Mm-hmm. Right? We’re gonna start simple and then we’ll build up as, as we continue to build more projects. Um, but this will be pretty exciting to see how it takes place. Um, to get us started, we’re going to go get the files and show you where to get those files off of our website, uh, so that you can download them and we’ll show you where to get ’em and how to use them to set up in order to make this project for yourself. This can be made out of any material. This is technically three quarter inch thick, so it can be made out of hard, soft wood, and you just plain it down from, let’s say four quarter stock all the way down to three quarter finish. And it’s ready to rock and roll. But we’ll get the rest of the information on blank sizes, cutters, where to set up. All that stuff will be on the files that we’ll go download. Okay. All right. I’m excited. That’s awesome. So you’re here on Legacy’s CNC training page”
Downloading & Preparing Files (2:02-5:58)
1:59-4:02: “So you’re here on Legacy’s CNC training page and you’re down here after the bootcamp episodes here under section two onboarding CNC projects. And you’re currently watching this video right now, project one vertical welcome sign. Directly under that video is where we can download the files. And so here we have two different, um, file downloads based on the controller. That’s on your CNC machine. And so you have a mock three controller, and then you have the Delta touch screen controller. And so whatever one you have is the one that you’re going to download. So if you click download, it will automatically download the file for us and we can now open up our file explorer. And if we go to downloads, we’re gonna find this, uh, v welcome sign, delta files and it’s zipped. This needs to be, um, unzipped to do that. We simply right click on that file and we look down here until we see the extract all option. And that is going to bring up an option to where we wanna save it. I’m just gonna save it to the same location and extract. So if we actually look at our downloads now, um, we have two files. Okay. Under our downloads we have the zipped file has this little zipper on the folder, and then we have the unzipped or extracted files. This is the one that we’re going to be using and move the files that we need to take to the CNC machine. So if we open this up and go to our Delta files, we have the G code file that we need to take to, to the machine, as well as the summary sheet that will tell us all the information on how to set up the part on the CNC system. So I’m gonna copy both of these over to our flash drive and then bring it over to our CNC and we will have me and finish the set of process. So now that we have the files on the flash drive, let’s plug this in so it’s ready to use for the job sheet and the G code files right into our controller. Alright?”
4:06-4:22: “Okay. Okay. Let’s go over here to our file Explorer. Yep. Open up our USB drive. It is this one. Okay. So I’m gonna pull up a welcome sign summary.”
4:26-6:01: “Excellent. And we’ll refer to that, um, when we need to based on our operations checklist. Mm-hmm. Right? So again, you can download that right off of the same, same website page, the operations checklist if you need, um, your own copy for the machine. Um, but let’s start with the first thing on top of that checklist. What is the first thing we need to do? Alright, We need to securely mount the blank. We do. Yeah. So I guess the question is what is, yeah. How, how big is the blank? You know, how do we orient it? Is it, is it mounted along the width of the length and how do we mount it? Right? So all that information is going to be gathered, um, from here or we’re gonna make some decisions from there, right? Mm-hmm. So based on our job sheet, what is the blank size that we need to prep for this project? We Need a 36 by six inch by three quarter blank. And looky here. Magical. Magical. Oh wow. Okay. Yeah. So you’re gonna have to prep your blank. This is, uh, again, just out of MDF obviously if you wanna make the sign out of any, any other material, you know, hard and soft wood, um, this will work just fine with the same programs for any of those given materials. Uh, so we’re going to now orient and mount this, um, blank on the machine. So how does this need to be oriented in the machine? Alright, Well the X is on the bottom left corner and it looks like you’re going lengthwise down the machine. And how do we know if we’re going lengthwise based on the job sheet information? Um, so we can see here on the job sheet, it’s look that it is, uh, sideways on the, on the job sheet”
Material Setup (5:58-10:08)
5:57-7:28: “that it is, uh, sideways on the, on the job sheet and then also down here it’s the bottom Left corner. That’s right. This tells us where XY zero is. But right here you can actually see the 36 inches is going along the x axis. Mm-hmm. Whereas the six inches is going along the y axis. If we were going along the width, 36 would be on the YY and the six inches would be on the x. Mm-hmm. Okay. So that’s how we can tell our orientation is just from the blank size information. It has X and Y tied to that. Alright? So we need, so we need to orient this along the length of the machine for the 36 inches. Okay? Okay. And we can just do that with, let’s say along the edge of our tables. Very easy. Now there’s gonna be different tables that you can use to mount this. We’re gonna be using one that everyone can get started with ASAP. ’cause if you don’t have a vacuum table system, if you don’t have a a t track table with low pro clamps, what can you get started with immediately? A spoil board. A spoil board of some kind. So whether if that’s just double stick tape to a spoil board, that’s what we’re shooting for here. Okay. So you could literally take a another sheet of MDF and that can be your spoil board. Um, you could double stick tape that down if you wanted to just to get started. Um, however many of our tables are coming with spoil boards, like the vacuum, um, vacuum table. Um, and if you did have your own t track table, you can even double stick tape to the top of that. Okay? So we’re gonna do double stick tape today. All right? Yep. That’s some. And let’s see if we have a knife in there.”
7:35-7:39: “Excellent. Okay, so we’re gonna need a couple of pieces holding this down.”
7:44-8:12: “So I’m just gonna put a strip, um, one on either end and one right in the middle. Mm-hmm. So I’m gonna do here just to get that locked on. So we have one, two, and three. Okay. There you have it. You know. There you go. All right.”
8:16-8:29: “Okay. So Mason, where do you want to put this? All right, let’s put it right here in the corner. Awesome. So we’re gonna have to peel the tape, but yeah, I see exactly. You’re gonna line it up right with the edge of this table. Excellent. Okay, so let’s peel that tape. Peel the tape.”
8:36-9:01: “You are much faster than me. You must have some fingernails or something a little bit. There We go. Okay, wonderful. Okay, Here, I’ll grab this edge for you. It’s Right there. Look Good? Yep. Just pressure down.”
9:05-10:08: “Excellent. Give that a shove just to test it. Make sure. Perfect. All Right. Okay, so that’s nice and secure. Um, we can now set up what we need to set up for the rest of the checklist. So what is next on our checklist? Alright, we need to click on our horizontal workstation screen. Okay, so back on the controller. We go back to the controller and we go to horizontal. All righty. Now we need to select and name work offset. Okay? We’ll do this, but we will name it sign. Excellent. Okay, so you’re just choosing the top one, which is the G 54 work offset position. Mm-hmm. And naming a sign. Beautiful. Uh, what is next? Alright, Next we need to check that the MTC tools are ready or load our A TC tools. Alright, so what tools are we using here? That Is a great question. Where can we find that? Probably in our, in our setup sheet. Yep. Back in the job sheet. So if we open that up, let’s see what tools we need. All right, we need a 60 degree V cutter, 60 degree V cutter. Okay, we can do that. That is not difficult. Let’s go grab you one. All right. You can put it in a tool holder. Now how can, um,”
CNC Controller Setup (10:08-13:12)
10:06-10:37: “You can put it in a tool holder. Now how can, um, let’s have you move the machine out of the way so we can, so we can load tools in and out of our tool rack. We can do that by going over here to control and going to safe XY zero. So now that we have our V cutter, I’m gonna go over here. Okay, now I don’t wanna go this way. Mm-hmm Just take it off.”
10:48-10:52: “Okay, now I’ll that guy out.”
10:55-11:01: “There we go. Make sure to give our collar flow.”
11:07-11:09: “Okay, now need a rag.”
11:16-12:54: “All right. And some good old dyna glide. Okay. Oh, there it’s okay. The good old wipe. So I out, okay, let’s see if I give ’em this. Okay, now. Nope, I was not doing that first. This first. Okay, nice slide on and then a snug from our wrench. Okay. Alright Guys. Ready? There we go. Now Snu that guy in.”
12:58-13:12: “Very good. So 60 degree V cutter is now in tool number one. Perfect. What’s next on the checklist? Next on the checklist, we need to use the vacuum table. Or not use the vacuum table but turn it off. Yes. Go over here. Yeah, we’re Gonna make sure it’s turned off. In”
Finding Offsets (13:12-16:53)
13:11-13:50: “Gonna make sure it’s turned off. In this situation, since we’re using double stick tape, You say no. Next we need to check and locate our X and Y offset. Now let’s use our handy dandy edge finder. Okay, we want to go to our tool release tool, clamp tool. There go. All right, now tool 12 is just fine and we can now go back in here. Okay? All right.”
13:56-14:01: “Okay, now we can go into our step jog, Keep It pretty high.”
14:07-16:36: “Okay, now we can go to our step jog again, lower it, okay, right about there. Then we zero it out X and Y and now we can bring it back to M to CX, y zero and I’ll put that super necessary, but we can release the tool, turn off our leg here and clamp the tool. Okay, now we have found our X and y next step is to set our Z. And for that we will need the tool that we put in tool number one. Alright, now we’ve picked that up. You can tell it’s come here actually, now that I’m thinking about it, let’s just have to go over there much easier using X and ZX and Y offset. We’re good. We wanna put our tool pad up there. Now how do we know which surface is supposed to be our Z zero? Ah yes. Come into our job setup sheet. Top of material right There. Yep. Z zero top material. And you did XY zero on the bottom left corner. So yes, so everything is on track. You’re doing awesome. Yes. So now I go back in here going to smart tool, make sure this is positioned above, oh, make sure first step jogs off and then we position it above, Makes it a little faster, Right about there. Then we can go to our smart tool, hit multiple tools. Alright, I have to move this back, settle it nicely and hit continue. Alright, very Good. Okay, so what’s next on the checklist? Turn off rapid Z, which we already know. Yep, it’s Turned off right there. Okay, Now we just need to load the tool path, which we can do in our program sheet open.”
16:39-16:56: “Go to the same drive that we got our setup sheet from and there’s our G code. Okay, next up we want to check the tool numbers and make sure they match on the code. That’s right. So we can check in here we see”
Loading Tool Path & Running the Program (16:53-19:52)
16:52-19:41: “That’s right. So we can check in here we see tool one v, group V cutter, 60 degrees. Very good. Okay, next we start the program. Yeah, Let’s have you turn your dust collection. We can start her up. Alright. Okay. That to bet. Yeah. Alright, let’s get this cutter head out of the way. Here we go. Safe, X, Y, Z. Alright, Yeah, it looks sharp. Yeah. Okay, so let’s get this thing off. A little chisel work used as a lever works wonders. There you go. The other way. There we go. Good luck. Strong stuff. There we Go. Sweet. All right.”
19:48-19:52: “Not bad Mason for your first project. Not Bad, Not bad at all.”
Conclusion & Next Steps (19:52-20:50)
19:50-20:50: “Bad, Not bad at all. Now that obviously you can finish this in, in different ways and we can make this out of a variety of different materials. Um, we’ve also added in the project files that we’ve given you or you’ve downloaded the G code and also the job setup sheet. Uh, we also have the drawing file to where you can put, for example, your initial, let’s say like one letter here of your last name and established by things like that. So we have, uh, templated out certain areas that you can come and customize to make this your own instead of just having a general, uh, welcome sign. Um, but yeah, that’s, that’s pretty awesome. Well done. So we’re gonna have another video that actually shows the step-by-step process on how to, again, customize those areas. And so make sure to go check that out if that’s something you wish to do. If not, the uh, g code files that are provided for you will give you this, um, with welcome sign that you see here. So well done, Mason. All right, have fun making yourself again, some”
