Lesson 4: Changing Assigned Numbers

This tutorial provides a concise guide on how to change the tool number in a CNC machine’s spindle without physically removing the tool, using the controller’s tool management features. The instructor highlights the following key steps:

  1. Accessing the tool management screen on any workstation
  2. Identifying the tool currently in the spindle
  3. Clicking the “tool in spindle” button to prompt the tool number change
  4. Selecting the new tool number and confirming the reassignment
  5. Understanding the distinction between changing tool numbers for auto and manual tool changes

Main purpose: To instruct users on the efficient method of reassigning tool numbers in a CNC machine without needing to perform a manual tool change.

Key takeaways:

  • Easy reassignment of tool numbers through the controller
  • Importance of using the “tool in spindle” button for changes
  • Application for both auto and manual tool change settings

Tool Management Overview (0:00-0:43)

0:00-0:44: “Hey, hey, welcome to another training video. This is gonna be the last topic about tool management, and this will be a nice, simple short one. All we’re gonna do is show you how to change the tool number that is already in the spindle. So here, for example, I have tool number one in my spindle already, and what if I want to change that cutter and reassign it to a different tool number? Now, technically I could perform a manual tool change and that will bring the, the cutter to me and I can release the tool, put the tool back in, and then it’ll ask me to then assign the number to whatever I want. That is one method, but there is a shortcut method that doesn’t require us taking the tool out of the spindle.”

Steps to Change Tool Number (0:43-2:02)

0:41-2:02: “that doesn’t require us taking the tool out of the spindle. So lemme show you where that is right here in the controller. So this can be done again on any of the workstation screens. So I’m gonna go to my horizontal table workstation screen. And back to our tool display screen. We have the tool in spindle number and we have the pickup tool number. So we have technically gone through all the commands here, um, for the tool management screen. Um, in past videos, there is this last feature that we can do and this is the only one that is not tied to clicking on the number. So far we’ve clicked on tool numbers. Um, anytime we’ve performed a manual tool change or auto tool change sequence, it’s always clicking on the tool number To change that number value. In this one instance where we’re reassigning the tool in the spindle, we’re gonna click on the tool in the spindle button. If we click on that, it will then prompt us to change the number here and here we can finally click on the number and change this, let’s say to tool number two, which is empty in my tool rack and push play. And that will successfully reassign, uh, tool one to tool two. So, and that’s as easy as it is. Uh, just remember that it’s not clicking on the number value”

Conclusion (2:02-2:10)

1:59-2:09: “Uh, just remember that it’s not clicking on the number value on the tool in spindle. You have to click on tool in spindle button and then that will allow you to change that tool number to whatever you want it to be.”
