Understanding One of the Most Common CNC Dust Collection Questions

Overview

One of the most common questions Legacy receives is: ‘If my CNC has a 4-inch dust port, why do you recommend running 6-inch ductwork?’ The answer lies in reducing system resistance so the blower can deliver the greatest amount of useful airflow to the dust shoe.

The Goal Is Airflow

A dust collector is designed to move a large volume of air. Restricting the main duct too early increases static pressure and reduces the amount of air that can reach the machine. The objective is not maximum suction—it is maximum useful airflow.

Why Larger Duct Helps

A 6-inch main duct creates less friction than a 4-inch duct over the same distance. With less resistance, the blower operates closer to its most efficient point and delivers more total airflow to the machine.

Why Reduce Only at the Machine

The machine’s dust shoe may have a 4-inch connection, but there is no advantage to forcing the air through a 4-inch duct for the entire run. Keeping the main duct at 6 inches until the final few feet minimizes pressure losses before the air reaches the dust shoe.

Highway Analogy

Imagine a six-lane highway that narrows to one lane only at the final exit. Traffic flows efficiently until the last merge. Now imagine driving on a one-lane road for twenty miles. The second road moves far fewer cars even though both end at the same destination. Air behaves in much the same way.

When 4-Inch Duct Is Acceptable

Short duct runs between a collector and a single machine may perform adequately with 4-inch ducting. As the run becomes longer or additional fittings are added, the advantages of a 6-inch main duct become increasingly important.

Design the system around the blower—not the smallest opening. The 4-inch dust shoe is the finish line, not the entire race.

Common Misconception

“A smaller pipe creates more suction, so it must collect dust better.” While air speed may increase through a restriction, total airflow usually decreases as resistance rises.

□ Is my main duct 6 inches whenever practical?
□ Is the reduction to 4 inches made only near the machine?
□ Have I minimized unnecessary reducers?
□ Is flex hose kept short?
□ Are elbows gentle rather than sharp?

For most Maverick 4×8 installations, Legacy recommends a quality 5 HP collector with 6-inch smooth-wall ducting and a final reduction to the 4-inch dust shoe only at the machine.
